The iconic boathouses along the shoreline of Lake Wendouree are a testament to local cultural and architectural history, with many of them dating back to the early 20th century. Today, these charming buildings remain a focal point of the lake, maintaining their role as symbols of community heritage and a link to Ballarat’s past. The boathouses, with their picturesque settings and nostalgic appeal, continue to be a beloved feature of Lake Wendouree, preserving the traditions of water-based recreation.
This project involved the thoughtful transformation of a once dilapidated boathouse into a warm, inviting space that can be enjoyed year-round. Originally in a state of neglect, the boathouse required extensive structural repairs and reimagining to fulfill its new purpose as a cozy retreat, blending seamlessly with its natural lakeside surroundings.
The design process focused on enhancing the building’s inherent charm while addressing functional needs. To create a more comfortable, year-round environment, the interiors were well insulated and then wrapped to create an airtight barrier. Large, strategically placed windows invite natural light and offer uninterrupted views of the lake, while providing ventilation and connection to the outdoors.
Warm, natural materials were chosen to create a sense of comfort and intimacy, making the space feel welcoming even during the colder months. The addition of a small seating areas enhances the boathouse’s role as a year-round sanctuary, perfect for relaxing, entertaining, or enjoying the changing seasons by the water.
