This Urban Cottage is a thoughtful dialogue between past and present. The design restores the original miner’s cottage at the front of the site, preserving its modest scale, simple material palette, and crafted detailing as a reminder of the area’s working-class origins. This careful restoration celebrates the building’s historical integrity, re-establishing its connection to the street and the urban fabric it once defined.
The new addition draws reference from the proportions, rhythms, and textures of the original cottage, reinterpreting them through contemporary materials and refined detailing. Its form and alignment maintain the integrity of the original roofline and volume, while subtle shifts in scale and light create a distinct, modern living environment that honours the past without replicating it.
Together, the old and new components acknowledge the layered history of the site while offering a contemporary home suited to urban life today. The project demonstrates how heritage and modern design can coexist, each enriching the other through contrast, respect, and continuity.
